Precious Stones in brass band contest

Mijn compositie Precious Stones wordt gebruikt als verplicht werk in een online brassband contest.
De wedstrijd staat open voor brassband vanuit de hele wereld.
Het principe is eenvoudig: studeer het stuk in; neem het op en mail het.
Er zijn diverse prijzen te winnen, waaronder een uitzending van de winnende opname op BBC Radio “Sounds of Brass”!

My composition Precious Stones will be used as set work in an online brass band contest.
The contest is open to brass band from all around the world.
It's simple really; Rehearse the piece as much or as little as you like; recording your best performance and mail it.
There are various prizes to win, amongst which a broadcast of the winning performance on BBC Radio “Sounds of Brass”!

Under construction: Colourful Trinity

Ik ben aan de slag gegaan met een brassband stuk, dat ik Colourful Trinity genoemd heb.
Het is geschreven in modus no. 3 van Olivier Messiaens systeem van modi van beperkte transpositie. Deze modus heb ik bewust gekozen, want:

deze heeft nummer 3
bestaat uit 3 x 3 noten (exclusief de afsluitende noten)
is onderverdeelbaar in 3 symterische stukken (vanwege de beperkte transponeerbaarheid)

Na de eerste drie noten herhaald de relatieve afstand tussen de noten zich. Op sommige plaatsen heb ik drie parallele stemmen geschreven die precies een grote terts verschillen (ik heb dit triunisono genoemd - een verwijzing naar de drieënige God).

In deel IV verschijnt de melodie van Nicea, omgevormd naar modus no. 1 (die op zich weer een subset is van modus no. 3.) In de Finale klinkt deze melodie samen met het thema en ander thematisch materiaal in modus no. 3. Dat levert dus Drie-in-één op.

Ik zou het leuk vinden als je wilt luisteren en laat weten wat je ervan vindt.

I have been working on a brass band piece, which I named Colourful Trinity.
It is written in mode no. 3 of Olivier Messiaen's system of modes of limited transposition. This mode is chosen on purpose, because:

it's number is 3
it consists of 3 x 3 notes (excluding the ending notes)
it is dividable in 3 symetric parts (because of the limited transposition)

After the first three notes, the relative distance between the notes repeats itself. At times, I have written three parallel parts that have a constant distance or a major third (I call this triunison - a reference to the triune God.)

In part IV the tune Nicea appears, transformed to mode no. 1 (which is a subset of mode no. 3.) In the Finale, this tune is used against the theme and other figures in mode no. 3, so we get Three-in-one.

Gymnopedie No. 1

Deze keer geen eigen werk, maar een recensie.
Gymnopedie No. 1 is oorspronkelijk een pianocompositie van de Franse componist Erik Satie.
James McFadyen schreef een geweldige brassband bewerking van dit stuk.

Het stuk is geen transcriptie van de piano-score. De componist heeft de melodie gebruikt om een eigen bewerking te maken. Dat is erg goed gelukt.
Opvallend is, dat geen enkele partij voortekens heeft, waarmee de componist de indruk wekt dat het stuk atonaal is. Ik weet niet zeker of dit werkelijk het geval is.
Update. James schreef me vandaag: Het gebrek aan voortekens is mijn standaard werkwijze vanwege het zeer modale karakter van de muziek.
De bewerking begint zacht en geheimzinnig, maar kent ook overtuigende grootse momenten.

Ik zou heel graag een uitvoering of een opname van dit nummer willen horen.

This time not a piece of myself, but a review.
Gymnopedie No. 1 originally is a piano composition by the French composer Erik Satie.
James McFadyen wrote a great brass band arrangement of this piece.

The piece is not a transcription of the piano score. The composer used the melody to make a new arrangement. Very successful.
It is remarkable that not a single instument has sharps and flats in the key signature, with wich the composer creates the impression that the piece is atonal. I am not sure whether this realy is the case.
Update. James wrote me today: The lack of a key signature is a standard practice of mine due to the highly modal nature of the music.
The arrangement starts soft and mysterious, but also has convincing impressive moments.

I really would like to hear a performance or a recording of this piece.

Precious stones

Precious stones (waardevolle stenen) is een suite in drie delen.

In Quartz wordt het (in de elektronica gebruikte) repeterende patroon van een kwartskristal uitgebeeld. Vanzelfsprekend vervuld in dit deel de muzikale kwart een belangrijke rol :-)

In Diamond klinkt een melodie die de schoonheid van dit gesteente wil uitbeelden.

De suite sluit af met het stevige The Rock.

Update:
Precious Stones is op 19 februari uitgekomen bij Devilish Publishing. In verband hiermee is de full score niet meer gratis beschikbaar.

Bekijken en beluisteren

Precious stones is a suite with three parts.

In Quartz, the (in electronics used) repeating pattern of the quartz crystal is depicted. The musical fourth (in Dutch kwart) has an important role!

The melody in Diamond tries to depict the beauty of this stone.

The suite closes with the firm The Rock.

Ik ben erg benieuwd naar reacties.
